KHD recently completed a unique and technically challenging project at the iconic Hepburn Springs Bathhouse, where we were engaged to help deliver a long-term solution for a timber deck located in a persistently damp environment.

The architect (Andronas Conservation Architecture) sought a durable alternative to traditional timber, which had proven vulnerable to rot and termite damage over time. The answer? Fibreglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) Grating—a high-performance material ideal for wet and corrosive conditions.

Why FRP Grating?

FRP Grating offers a range of benefits that make it superior to conventional materials like wood, steel, and concrete:

Installation Details

For this project, the FRP Grating was installed on a custom aluminium frame system, supported by VersiJack MRJ pedestals. This combination provided a stable, elevated platform that is both functional and visually appealing.

This system is also ideal for elevated plaza areas requiring multiple surface finishes such as synthetic turf or paving. Typically supported at 600mm centres, VersiJack pedestals offer an economical and easy-to-install solution.

All components—FRP Grating, aluminium framing, and VersiJack pedestals—were proudly supplied by KHD.

Magnificent 36-Storey Apartment Overlooking Port Phillip

The Challenge: Lifting the new retractable roof into place.

Solution: To create a seamless transition from inside to outside, 600x600x20mm Porcelain Tiles with a Travertine finish were chosen to match the existing internal tiles. The Elmich Concealed Paver Retainer (CPR) was selected to prevent wind uplift from dislodging the tiles.

When wind rushes down the face of a building, it creates a negative air pressure zone that can lift tiles from the standard Versipave or Versijack pedestal system. The Elmich CPR addresses this issue by ensuring the pavers remain secure. The corner plates of the CPR are designed to prevent the paver adhesive from contacting the pedestal, allowing individual pavers to be easily removed and replaced by simply removing the central fastening screw and lifting the tile.

Using the Elmich CPR in exposed or high-risk situations provides peace of mind to builders and building managers.

This magnificent sprawling private residence on the Mornington Peninsula has punctuations of bluestone throughout. As you meander through the property the visitor discovers numerous concealed garden rooms. These rooms have been created as contemplative places allowing the visitor to relax and unwind. These rooms are tastefully designed and accented with Australian Bluestone. The Bluestone is non-intrusive and sits perfectly in harmony with the green foliage palette. A mix of Hillview and Harcourt Granite spalls has been used to construct the staircase risers and stringers.

The pool is slick and polished. Framing the pool, a course of bluestone pavers and bull-nosed coping have been employed. This simplicity ensures the stone does not detract from the view. 

The property is still under construction with the addition of several guest houses.
