The completion of the latest stage of ‘Melbourne Square Development’ was immensely successful as Delta Group rose to the challenge during Covid that restricted the number of workers on the site.

Approximately 800m2 of Bluestone Paving and Decking were installed on Versijack paver and deck supports up to heights of 500mm.

The VersiJack paver & deck support system is an advanced generation of pedestals, engineered in Australia to provide a versatile, sustainable solution to support raised pavers and decking. It improves heat and sound insulation, facilitates rapid surface drainage and creates an easily accessible chamber to conceal mechanical and electrical services. The pedestals are easy to use across its extensive height range allowing for an efficient and cost-effective solution.

Versipave units can be snapped into halves or quadrants for wall and corner junctions making this product the most economical solution for elevated paving systems. The installer only needs to commit one Versipave unit per tile, minimising waste. This is especially evident when there are multiple wall and corner junctions over numerous balconies.

The system eliminates the need for screeds reducing the dead loads on building structures and allows the builder to easily access the membrane if required.
When using Porcelain Tiles on paver supports it is important to incorporate a fall into the finished surface. Porcelain tiles are non-porous which is great for maintenance but due to the high surface tension of the tiles, water remains on the surface until it evaporates. This could lead to slip hazards and is also unsightly.
To overcome this, a fall can easily be incorporated into the finished surface to ensure the water is shed to the 4mm open joints. Using Versipave, each corner of the tile is independently adjustable, so the installer can easily create falls across the site. Do not use self-levelling paver supports as this will ensure water is retained on the surface of the tile.

When set down heights demand 200mm or greater, it is more economical to use the Versijack Paver Support. Versijack screw jack pedestals are available with a slope corrector which can be utilised to incorporate a fall. Finer adjustment on each corner can be achieved using 1 or 2mm neoprene shims.

An additional Eastbound vehicular lane and separated cycle & pedestrian lanes in each direction will ease congestion for motorists and provide a safer crossing for pedestrians and cyclists.

BKK Architects’ design draws inspiration from landmarks including Victorian Arts Centre and the rowers who make their way up and down the Yarra River each morning.

The abutments at each embankment will showcase Sawn Bluestone cladding, maintaining Melbourne’s love affair with the subtle colour of the stone. The large bluestone panels deliver a visual scale of solidity, grounding the structure to the bank.

The stone is fixed to the in-situ concrete substrate using 8, 10 & 12mm stoneclips.
Main contractor, Seymore Whyte awarded the installation to Image Paving and Sky Group who are making great progress due to the simplicity of the stoneclip system.

Most councils insist on permeable surfaces to reduce the pressure on our storm water infrastructure.

As the building envelope increases and open space areas are reduced, architects & developers are consistently looking for ways to meet councils’ demands for permeable surfaces. To meet council demands and allow storm water to percolate back into the ground, a great solution for this is Turfpave. Turfpave is a light weight plastic structure manufactured from 100% recycled polypropylene designed to stabilize and support turf, grass or gravel. Positioned under the grass surface, the Turfpave distributes loads from pedestrian and vehicular traffic to the base course below, minimising root compaction. Seen here in the main photo is the All Press Melbourne Roastery in Collingwood where the site allows out of hours deliveries while allowing the site to be used as an alfresco dining area by day. By choosing turf instead of paving, the area is much cooler on hot days, and stains just simply grow out! As a gravel confinement solution, Turfpave solves the problem of stones migrating away from vehicles tyres, which ultimately lead to unsightly wheel ruts in driveways and carparks. If additional drainage is required, a layer of Versicell can be incorporated below the Turfpave and excess storm water manged to traditional pits.

MPavilion 2017, open from 5 October 2017 – 4 February 2018, is a civic space and a cultural laboratory in which Melbournians are experiment and experience, through the event hub and meeting place.

This year’s MPavilion is the fourth of its kind, designed by Netherlands–based architects Rem Koolhaas and David Gianotten of OMA. OMA is an international practice and MPavilion 2017 is their first-ever completed Australian architectural commission.

Coolth Inc was engaged by OMA to construct the landscaping, which is an angular, faceted embankment, which forms the back of a semicircular tribune.

Achieving the challenging design was possible thanks to using KHD’s VersiWeb. VersiWeb allowed Coolth Inc to plant 4000 Australian native grasses in a steep slope and formed the sharp edges of the embankment’s geometric pattern. We really love this design.

KHD is passionate about landscaping design and love to push the boundaries when it comes to green infrastructure. Thanks to VersiWeb, Coolth Inc were able to successfully achieve the unique landscaping design required by OMA.
